Getting Ready for Movers

When you’re getting ready for a big move, a good  moving company can be your best friend. Moving companies have the process down to an exact science, so it’s in your best interest to do everything you can to prepare your home for them to come in and do their job as efficiently as possible.

Use this checklist to make sure you’re ready for the moving company:

1. Separate important documents and valuables.

If you’re handling the packing, make sure to place fragile valuables in their own boxes and mark them clearly. Also keep in mind that a moving company may avoid transporting important documents and cash, so prepare to take those with you.

2. Dispose of hazardous chemicals.

You won’t be able to take anything flammable with you, and a moving company will also refuse to transport many hazardous chemicals. Make this easier by throwing away household chemicals before the move.

3. Prioritize your plants.

A moving company won’t transport certain kinds of plants. If there are some plants you absolutely want to keep, be sure to bring it to the movers’ attention right away so you can either get it packed up or thrown out.

4. Take care of large appliances.

If you are planning on transporting refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines or dryers, you’ll want to check with your moving company first. Some movers will require that your large appliances be prepped for the move by certified technicians.

5. Unplug everything.

For smaller appliances, go around and make sure that everything is unplugged. If your television has a complex network of cables, you might want to snap a quick photo so you or the moving company will be able to get everything plugged in again quickly at the new home.

6. Clean up.

Dust, mop, sweep, and vacuum everything you can. Make sure there isn’t a lot of dust in the air for the sake of the moving company.

7. Mark your boxes.

Even if the movers are helping with the packing, get all of your supplies organized by room and mark every box clearly with a dark, thick marker. Small pens won’t be easy to read, so make sure your writing is legible even from several yards away.

8. Isolate your pets.

If you have pets, keep them in the yard, in a crate, or isolated in a single room to make sure they are out of the way. Consider boarding them or leaving them with a neighbor during the move.

9. Double and triple check everywhere!

Before Mike the Mover arrives, go through every drawer, cabinet, and closet one last time to make sure nothing is left behind.

And remember to book your date early! Mike the Mover is Guelph’s best moving company and we book early. To avoid disappointment call as soon as you know your dates.
